Little More Gobstoppin

Another update of my project. I am still really happy with what I am producing. I am no professional, but it is rewarding when you look at your model then look at pictures of the car and it actually LOOKS like it! amazing!

The course of the day is now; do a a little teaching in the morning on a new subject (today it was weighting vertices so that when you move a joint it stretches the correct polygons) then get on with your personal project. Which seems a bit strange at first, but everyone really wants to finish their project so it is good. There is also always someone around to help you if you need it. So it is still learning as you get to model something you want but then if you come across any problems, someone shows you how to do it.

I don't need that much help. Not showing off, I just manage to figure stuff out!

Anyway, here are some more pics.

I did some detailing today, finished off (well I say finished I will probably go round and tweak allot of it still!) the mirror, and also added the little indent along the side of the car which I am really happy that it turned out so well!

And I also started on the spoiler, I have been trying to find as many pictures as possible of it, but they are slightly different from the gobstopper so I have to referring back and forth to the limited pictures I have to make sure what I am modelling is true. But here you go!

I was hoping to do a bit more of this tonight, but I am getting immense Mouse Hand so I am going back home to have a brew!

Progress of The Gobstopper

Though I would update this with a little bit about the project I am doing. I am trying to model the Roger Clark Motorsport's Gobstopper
Photobucket

At first people said that it would be a hard object to model, and I agree with them! But I thought I would prefer to do some something like this that I am actually interested in, rather than model a Violin, while would be good in it's on right, wouldn't keep me interested enough to stay up till 2am trying to get that last little bit done!

So I have had allot of advice along the way which has really helped, and here is (some) of what I have so far!
Photobucket

This is the Curve Network. At first I was just having a polygon plane and then extruding and adding from there, then someone suggested to do it this way. I am so glad I changed to do it this way! It means that you just draw the edges of You object then use a tool called "Append Polygon", all you need to do is click on the previous plane then click on the lines where you want the next edge to be! so it already has the general shape. I am not the greatest at explaining, but hopefully you understand!
Photobucket

Anyway, there is a little pic of what I have got, it is not all of it (don't want to show it all in one go, but I am pretty happy with what I am producing.

Shall try and give another update tomorrow!

Week 3 Down!

Well another week has gone by at Escape. It Seems like it is going so fast! But still really enjoying it. We did Polygons last week which obviously the part I was looking forward to!
We started off by modelling something simple and proving how powerful "Duplicate Special" can be! By modellign part of a tire and then Duplicatiing it a certain amount of times and slightly offset each time. So this meant that it created the whole tread just from one little bit!

We Then Went on to model a pair of headphones. This was more just to show how you only have to model one side while having a live preview of what it would look like when it is smoothed and finished. As you can see in the picture we also modeled it flat then just added a bend modifier to make it curve.
Photobucket

Then last of all we modeled a Mustang Plane. This was fun too as it gave me some insight into how to do big real world objects, like plans or cars.

I Have also now decided that I am going to do the RogerClarkMotorsport as my 6 week Prject. I have started it a bit, Shall be posting some WIPs soon!

Stay Tuned

Week 2: Animation

Haven't really updated this as much as I should have been, but oh well. We finished off covering everything very slightly last week, now each on of those day's is getting taught in depth over the space of a week. This week animation!

We covered animation a bit last week and it was good, it seems quite hard at first but you get the hang of it quite quickly. It's just trying to remember what constraints to use with what is the hard part! Aim? Parent? point?

Today we made a digger, well made it appear as though it was, picking up a box and moving it to another location, that was quite fun. Then we got to animate the ol' "Pixar Lamp" using bones and IK. That was a bit more fun. We just have the jump animation done at the moment, but tomorrow I believe we are going to adapt on this, well even if the class doesn't I will be. Hopefully completing some kind of hilarious short!

Even though I didn't come into this course wanting to know animation, it is good they teach you it and I am really quite interested now! Even if I don't end up using it in a job I definitely think I would use it in my own spare time for fun!

I also got an Intuos4 at the weekend, it is awesome, the 8 buttons and the 'iPod click wheel' work so well! You can also make all of the buttons set up just how you want and application specific, haven't quite done that myself yet but I soon will.

I shall try to update this more, but if I updated constantly you wouldn't do the course yourself now would you!

Day 3: Lighting and UV mapping!

Today we looked a lot more into how to light objects correctly and how to texture simple things like a die. It is similar in theory to max but things are slightly different which sometimes annoys me makes up for the fact that Maya does have some cool features!

Even though I am doing this course as a games course, so don't really need to learn how to set up a scene properly and how to light it, it is always nice to know how to do it if i ever wanted to show things off. But we are also learning the theory behind lighting so i suppose it is good to know that, as when i get it in game i will know where i want to put lights to make the objects i create look best.

I will be quite interested once we get into how to unwrap objects that are very irregular, like broken concrete pillars etc

Anyway, here is an image of what i created today!

Photobucket

Not over the top wow, and it is a little dark (but that sets the mood right:P), but I am happy with that considering i have only been using Maya 3 days!

Going to see the "Haunting in Conniticut" tonight too. reckon it will be scary as shit.

Day 1: Polys and NURBS

Well the first day is over, and i am just sitting in the room still messing around with Maya. In the morning we covered polygon modelling and in the afternoon NURBS. Quite strange just having a quick look at things then moving on, but i suppose this way we get an idea of everything then can go back at a later date and learn those subjects better once we have the intitial grasp.

We made a (crappy) robot with polys and a fruitbowl, with fruit, using NURBS. I have never used NURBS really before, but are good once you get the hang of things (and when you can actually manage to keep up with the tutor! Ctrl-Z ftw!) I shall see if i can get some pics posted up of my WIPs soon.

Anyway, really liking it so far, can't wait to see what else we do. Apparently it is texturing tomorrow! At this rate, we will be done by the weekend!
